Agile

Agile is the most consequential management idea software ever produced — and the most diluted word in the industry. At its core: build in small increments, get working software in front of real users frequently, and adapt to what you learn instead of following a fixed plan. Done well it de-risks delivery; done as theatre it removes planning without adding adaptability.

What It Is

Agile is a set of values and principles — formalised in the 2001 Manifesto — favouring individuals and interactions over processes and tools, working software over comprehensive documentation, customer collaboration over contract negotiation, and responding to change over following a plan. In practice, agile organisations deliver in small increments (weeks, not quarters), involve users continuously, keep requirements deliberately evolving, and empower small self-organising teams. It is not the absence of process: mature agile is heavily disciplined — just differently, with the discipline pointed at frequent delivery and feedback rather than upfront specification. Scrum, Kanban and XP are concrete frameworks implementing agile ideas.

Why It Matters to You

The executive understanding that matters is what agile changes commercially. It converts fixed-scope contracts (price for a specification) into capacity arrangements (price for a team's time) — which shifts the risk of scope clarity from vendor to buyer, and shifts the benefit of early learning to whoever engages most with the delivered increments. Agile's failure mode in organisations is partial adoption: planning removed, discipline not installed — no long-term roadmap and no short-term rigour either. The test of real agility is boring: is working software delivered on a regular cadence, and does feedback demonstrably change what gets built next?

When You'll Meet It

Everywhere — in vendor proposals, internal team charters, and transformation programmes. When a vendor says agile, translate: what cadence, what feedback loop, what definition of done, and what do I see at each increment?
