Blue-Green Deployment

Blue-green deployment is how you release software with the exit already built: two identical production environments, only one live at a time. Deploy the new version to the idle twin, verify it, then switch traffic over in seconds — and switch back just as fast if it's wrong. Release as a reversible decision.

What It Is

In blue-green deployment, two production environments (blue and green) run side by side: one serves all live traffic while the other receives the new version. Cutover happens at the load balancer — traffic flips from blue to green in moments, with the old environment kept warm as the rollback path. If the new version misbehaves, traffic flips back; there is no 'deploy the previous version' scramble because the previous version is still running. Costs are real (double the production footprint, and database schema changes need careful forward-and-backward-compatible design), which is why the pattern suits systems where downtime or slow rollback is the expensive thing.

Why It Matters to You

The executive significance is what this pattern does to release risk: it converts deployment from an irreversible act into a switch, which changes the economics of shipping often. Rather than batching changes into rare, high-ceremony releases (each one a mini-project of risk), teams with reversible deploys can ship small changes continuously — and small changes are individually safer and collectively easier to diagnose. When a vendor or internal team describes their release process, 'how long is your rollback?' is the question that separates the patterns: minutes means something like blue-green or its cousins; hours means every release is a bet.

When You'll Meet It

In architecture and release-process reviews. 'What is your rollback time?' — asked once — characterises an entire delivery operation.
