Caching

Caching is keeping a copy close: the answer to an expensive question, stored where asking it again is cheap. It is why the second page load is instant and the first one wasn't — and it is the mechanism behind some of the most mystifying bugs in computing, all stemming from the same root: a cache is a copy, and copies can be wrong.

What It Is

A cache is a high-speed store holding results so future requests are served from it rather than recomputed or refetched. Caches appear at every layer: in the browser, at the CDN edge (see CDN), in front of databases, inside applications, on the CPU itself. The engineering craft is the cache strategy — what is cached, for how long (time-to-live), and when it is invalidated — because a cache's fundamental trade is speed against freshness: an aggressive cache is fast and stale; a timid one is fresh and slow. Cache invalidation is famously one of the two hard problems in computer science (the joke's other entries: naming things, and off-by-one errors).

Why It Matters to You

Executives meet caching through its failures and its bills. The failures: 'I fixed it but the system still shows the old value' — a stale cache somewhere between the fix and the eyes, and the standard explanation for changes that appear not to have taken effect. The bills: caching is also how scale economics work — CDN caching keeps traffic off origin servers, database caching keeps read load off the expensive tier; cache hit rates are quietly a line item in cloud bills and performance budgets. When a vendor explains performance numbers, the honest question is what they assume about cache warmth — benchmarks on warm caches flatter everything.

When You'll Meet It

In performance discussions, cloud-cost reviews, and the 'change didn't take effect' support ticket. Add 'is it a cache?' to the standard triage questions — it usually is.
