DevOps

DevOps is the merger of the two halves that used to be separate departments: the engineers who build software and the operators who run it. One combined discipline, automated end to end, is why modern teams ship daily instead of quarterly — and why 'it works on my machine' has become inexcusable.

What It Is

DevOps is a culture and practice set that unifies software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops): shared ownership from code to production, automation of the pipeline between them (CI/CD — automated building, testing and deployment of every change), infrastructure defined as versioned code, and monitoring that feeds production reality back into development. Its famous metric is lead time — from idea to running in production — which elite organisations measure in hours rather than months. The practices compound: automated testing makes frequent deployment safe; frequent deployment makes feedback fast; fast feedback makes product better.

Why It Matters to You

DevOps maturity is one of the strongest proxy signals for engineering quality you can inspect in a vendor or an internal team. Ask how often they deploy to production (daily is healthy, quarterly is a museum) and what happens when a deployment fails (rollback in minutes is the DevOps answer; a war room and a hotfix weekend is the legacy one). The commercial echoes are real: deployment frequency determines how quickly your change requests materialise, and shared Dev/Ops ownership eliminates the classic vendor finger-pointing between 'the code' and 'the environment'.

When You'll Meet It

In engineering assessments, vendor due diligence, and any discussion of release cadence or incident response. The deployment-frequency question is the five-second temperature check.
