Penetration Test (Pen Test)

A penetration test is a sanctioned attack on your own system: security professionals attempting to break in the way a real adversary would, before a real adversary does. For any system holding personal data or business-critical operations, it has moved from good practice to expected evidence — insurers, clients and regulators increasingly ask for the report by name.

What It Is

A penetration test is an authorised, time-boxed exercise in which security specialists probe a system for exploitable weaknesses — unvalidated inputs, authentication flaws, misconfigurations, exposed data — attempting to demonstrate actual impact, not theoretical risk. Scopes vary: black box (no insider knowledge) to white box (full documentation and code), external (internet-facing) to internal, application to network to social engineering. Output is a report ranking findings by severity with reproduction steps and remediation guidance, plus a retest cycle to confirm fixes. It differs from a vulnerability scan (automated, breadth-first, no exploitation) as an audit differs from a checklist.

Why It Matters to You

The pen test report has become a business document: enterprise customers request it in vendor due diligence, cyber-insurance underwriters condition pricing on it, and regulators treat its absence as governance negligence after an incident. Two executive cautions. First, a pen test is a snapshot — it certifies the version tested, and every release after it is untested until the next one; ask vendors for their testing cadence, not just their last report. Second, remediation is the point: an unremediated report is worse than none, because it documents known, accepted risk. Contracts should specify who fixes what, on what timeline, and who retests.

When You'll Meet It

Before major launches, annually for internet-facing systems, and on request from clients, insurers or acquirers. If a vendor resists sharing at least an executive summary of their latest pen test, treat that as a finding in itself.
