Release Notes

Release notes are the changelog you're shown when software moves under you: what changed, what's new, what breaks, and what you must do. Small document, outsized signal — how a vendor writes release notes tells you how they think about your operations.

What It Is

Release notes accompany every software release, describing: new features, improvements, defect fixes (usually by identifier), known issues, security patches, and required actions — configuration changes, migrations, deprecations, new version requirements. They range from rigorous engineering documents (versioned, dated, with upgrade instructions and rollback notes) to a marketing bullet list of features. For self-hosted software, release notes carry upgrade instructions and breaking-change warnings; for SaaS, they tell you what will change in your workflow whether you were consulted or not.

Why It Matters to You

Two executive uses. First, risk: the breaking-changes and deprecations sections are where silent workflow disruption is announced — someone in your organisation should read every release note for systems the business depends on, before the release lands, not after support tickets start. Second, vendor assessment: release notes reveal engineering culture. Notes with honest known-issues sections, migration guidance and clear versioning signal a vendor who treats customers as operators; feature-bullet marketing with changes buried at the bottom signals the opposite. In vendor due diligence, read a year of their release notes — it is the most candid document most vendors produce.

When You'll Meet It

With every update of software you run or depend on. Assign ownership for reading them on critical systems; for SaaS, check whether the vendor gives advance notice or changes production on their own schedule.
