Seed Data

Seed data is the starter content of a system: the reference data, test records and demo accounts loaded at setup so the system is usable from the first minute. Humble stuff — until seed data leaks into production, and demo patients, fake invoices and password-123 admin accounts are suddenly live in a real hospital.

What It Is

Seed data is the initial data loaded into a system when it is deployed or reset: reference data the system needs to function at all (country codes, unit lists, role definitions, pricing tables), plus demonstration or test data used in non-production environments (sample patients, dummy transactions, demo accounts). The engineering distinction that matters is provenance discipline: reference seed data is legitimate in every environment, while synthetic demonstration data must never cross into production — a boundary enforced by pipeline design and checked in audits.

Why It Matters to You

Two executive-relevant failure patterns recur in real incidents. First, demo data in production: customers seeing fake records, dashboards counting demo transactions, test patients in clinical systems — always traceable to environment discipline breaking down, and disproportionately common in low-code and rapid-deployment toolchains where the seed step is one click. Second, the inverse: production data copied into test environments to 'make testing realistic', carrying personal data into systems with weaker controls — a data-protection breach wearing an engineering justification. Both patterns are audit findings, and both are preventable by policy plus pipeline design.

When You'll Meet It

In deployment reviews, data-protection audits, and demos. When a vendor demos impressively, one honest question: 'which of this is seeded sample data?' — and when you go live, one verification: that none of it came along.
