Test Plan

The test plan is the strategy document behind every credible 'it's been tested' claim: what will be tested, how, by whom, against which criteria — and just as importantly, what won't be. When a vendor cannot produce one, you are being asked to accept software on faith.

What It Is

A test plan defines the approach to verifying a software release: scope (features and requirements in and out of test), test types to be run (functional, regression, performance, security), environments and test data, entry and exit criteria (when testing starts, when it is 'done'), roles and responsibilities, schedule, risk assumptions, and defect management process. It is the document that makes testing a designed activity rather than an ad hoc one. Traceability is its backbone: every requirement should map to at least one test, and a coverage view shows requirements with no tests — the blind spots.

Why It Matters to You

Asking to see the test plan is one of the cheapest and most revealing due-diligence questions in software procurement. It shows instantly whether testing is engineered (risk-based, traceable, with defined exit criteria) or performative ('we test thoroughly'). The out-of-scope section is as informative as the in-scope one — performance quietly excluded there explains why the system crawls at go-live and nobody breached the contract. In regulated industries the test plan is also a compliance artefact: auditors and validators expect evidence that testing was planned, executed and recorded.

When You'll Meet It

During project planning and before each major release. In vendor engagements, request the test plan as a deliverable in the SOW — a vendor who resists committing to one in writing is telling you how testing will actually go.
