UML (Unified Modeling Language)

UML is the standardised diagramming vocabulary of software design — the reason a diagram drawn in Singapore can be read without explanation in Stockholm. Executives don't need to draw it; recognising its handful of high-value diagrams turns design reviews from theatre into inspection.

What It Is

The Unified Modeling Language is a standard set of notation and diagram types for specifying, designing and documenting software. Of its dozen-plus diagram types, a few carry most of the practical value: use case diagrams (actors and goals — the business-eye view), sequence diagrams (the step-by-step message flow between systems and users over time — indispensable for integration reviews), class diagrams (data structure and logic, close cousin of the ERD), and activity diagrams (workflow and decision branches — the technical cousin of the process map you already read). State diagrams show how a thing (an order, a claim) moves through statuses — often the fastest way to spot a missing cancellation or escalation path.

Why It Matters to You

UML's value to you is as a shared interrogation language. When a vendor walks through a sequence diagram, you can ask the two questions that matter: what happens when this step fails, and who is accountable at this arrow? Diagrams that only show the happy path are marketing; the state diagram with no 'expired' or 'cancelled' state is a defect waiting for production. Design reviews conducted over UML also create records — the diagram in the deck is the design the vendor can be held to later.

When You'll Meet It

In technical design reviews and integration discussions. You will see sequence diagrams most often when two or more systems must talk to each other — which is every enterprise project.
