Lesson 01
What is ChatGPT and Why It Matters for Everyone
Before We Begin
This guide was written for people who have never used an AI chatbot before. If you can send a WhatsApp message, you can use ChatGPT. We'll explain everything in plain English — no technical background needed.
What is AI? (The Simple Version)
AI stands for Artificial Intelligence. Think of it as software that can understand your questions and create things — text, images, code — based on what you ask for.
You've probably already used AI without realizing it:
- When Netflix suggests a show you might like — that's AI
- When your phone autocorrects a word — that's AI
- When Google finishes your search query — that's AI
ChatGPT is a specific type of AI that you can have a conversation with, just like texting a very knowledgeable friend.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a computer program made by a company called OpenAI (pronounced "open-A-I"). You type a message to it, and it types back a response. That's it.
In plain English: ChatGPT is like texting a really smart assistant who knows a little bit about almost everything.
You can ask it to:
- Write an email for you
- Explain a concept you don't understand
- Summarize a long document
- Brainstorm ideas for a project
- Translate between languages
- Write code (even if you don't know how to code)
- And much more
Why ChatGPT Matters for YOUR Career
You might think ChatGPT is only for tech people. It's not. Here's who's using it right now:
Marketing Manager, Sarah: "I used to spend 2 hours writing weekly newsletters. Now I describe what I want to ChatGPT and get a draft in 5 minutes. I just edit and send."
HR Director, James: "I feed ChatGPT our company policies and ask it to draft responses to employee questions. What used to take me 30 minutes now takes 3."
Small Business Owner, Maria: "I describe my products and ask ChatGPT to write product descriptions, social media posts, and ad copy. I used to pay a copywriter $500/month."
Student, Alex: "I paste my lecture notes into ChatGPT and ask it to create flashcards and quiz questions. My grades went from C's to A's."
Executive, David: "Before board meetings, I paste the agenda and financial reports into ChatGPT and ask it to highlight key risks and opportunities. It's like having a pre-briefing analyst."
The point isn't that ChatGPT replaces you. It makes you faster and more capable at whatever you already do.
ChatGPT Plans: Free vs Paid
ChatGPT offers several plans:
| Plan | Price | What You Get | Who It's For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Basic access to GPT-4o mini, limited messages per day | Casual users, trying it out |
| Plus | $20/month | GPT-4o, more messages, image generation, file uploads, web browsing | Most professionals |
| Pro | $200/month | Everything in Plus + unlimited access, fastest response times, access to most capable models | Power users, businesses |
Our recommendation: Start with the Free plan to learn. Upgrade to Plus when you find yourself hitting the daily message limit (you'll know when this happens — ChatGPT will tell you).
The Free plan is more than enough to follow along with this entire guide.
Key Terms to Know
Before we move on, here are a few terms you'll see throughout this guide:
- Prompt — The message you type to ChatGPT. Like giving instructions to a new employee. We'll cover this in detail in Lesson 3.
- Model — The AI "brain" that processes your request. Different models have different capabilities. Think of it like different engines in cars — a V8 is more powerful than a 4-cylinder.
- Token — A piece of text (roughly 4 characters). ChatGPT processes text in tokens. You don't need to count them — just know that longer conversations use more tokens.
- Conversation — A back-and-forth chat session. Each conversation remembers what was said earlier in that same session.
- Hallucination — When the AI confidently says something that's wrong. This happens sometimes. Always verify important information.
