What is Claude and Why People Love It
Before We Begin
Never used Claude before? Perfect. This guide starts from absolute zero. If you can send an email, you can use Claude. We'll explain every term the first time it appears.
What is Claude?
Claude is an AI assistant made by a company called Anthropic (pronounced "an-THROP-ik"). Just like ChatGPT is made by OpenAI, Claude is made by Anthropic.
In plain English: Claude is like having a very thoughtful, careful research assistant who reads everything you share and gives detailed, well-reasoned responses.
You type a message, Claude types back. Same basic idea as ChatGPT. But Claude has some important differences that make it the preferred choice for many professionals.
How Claude is Different from ChatGPT
Think of it like choosing between two excellent restaurants. Both serve great food, but they have different specialties:

The analogy: If ChatGPT is like a quick-witted friend who always has an answer, Claude is like a careful professor who reads your entire paper before commenting.
Why People Love Claude
1. It reads LONG documents. Claude can handle documents up to ~200 pages in one conversation. Paste your entire annual report, your full contract, or your 50-page research paper, and Claude will analyze the whole thing.
2. It's more careful. Claude is designed to be honest about what it doesn't know. It's less likely to make things up (though no AI is perfect — always verify).
3. Artifacts are game-changing. This is Claude's signature feature. When you ask Claude to create something — a document, a chart, a calculator, a webpage — it creates it as a separate "Artifact" that you can view, edit, and download. It's like having a mini-app generated for you on the spot.
4. Nuanced writing. Many professional writers prefer Claude for important communications — board memos, legal summaries, sensitive emails — because its writing style is more measured and thoughtful.

When to Pick Claude Over ChatGPT
Use Claude when you need to:
- Analyze a long document (contract, report, research paper)
- Write something important where tone matters (board memo, legal correspondence)
- Create structured content with Artifacts (calculators, dashboards, formatted documents)
- Get a second opinion — Claude sometimes catches things ChatGPT misses
Use ChatGPT when you need to:
- Brainstorm creative ideas quickly
- Generate images (built into ChatGPT Plus)
- Use custom GPTs (specialized AI assistants)
- Access real-time web browsing
